Applied Design Management: thought leadership in the practical application of design management methods, processes and tools
About the site: more to come!
About me: I completed undergraduate and postgraduate degrees in Architecture and also hold a Masters of Science in Computer Aided Design. I spent twelve years working in architecture, interiors and brand consultancy with people like HOK, RTKL, WATG and Wolff Olins. Most of my commercial experience is in retail design, narrative environments and translating brands such as Orange, Starbucks, JVC and Allied Irish Bank (AIB) into 3D environments, services and experiences. More recently, I’ve been getting much more involved in the strategic front end of projects – helping to make the business case. And doing a lot of public speaking engagements.
I also held a research position in virtual environments at the Human Interface Technology Laboratory, the University of Washington (Seattle), and got to work on immersive environments and simulated experiences (including virtual reality) within a few industries – including games.
I’m now on sabbatical as Course Leader in Design Management at the University for the Creative Arts (the courses recently moved from Farnham to Epsom). I’m responsible for academic leadership and course management of the postgraduate courses in MA Design and Strategy, MA Innovation and Brand Management and MA Creative Enterprise.
Previously I lectured at the Royal College of Art (London), the Bartlett School of Architecture (University College London) and the Parson School of Design (New York). I was made a Fellow of the Royal Society of the Arts (FRSA) in 2003. Recent clients and consultancy projects include: Booz Allen Hamilton, Kajima Design Europe, the Design Council, and Hanyang University/the Korean Government.
In December 2006, ‘Design Management: Managing Design Strategy, Process and Implementation’ (AVA Publishing) was publicly launched at the Design Council, and things have gone a bit crazy since then. It’s the best selling and fastest selling book ever on design management, now in its third edition, with translations in 6 languages. I’m on sabbatical from my academic post to write a second book, due for release in 2009.
